Terple from Tribal

Terple from Tribal

Hey, it’s Squid Pants here looking at an offering from Tribal.  I know their Cuban Linx was super popular and had a reputation for consistent quality so I’m entering this with high expectations.

Terple

Terple was bred by In House Genetics and is Tropicana Cookies x Slurricane so fruit and berries are expected here.  I am a fan of the varieties that In House produces in general, so my expectations remain high.

Tribal

Tribal don’t really mention anything about themselves on their website, nor in any of the half-measures searching I did.  You know what, I’m just going to let sleeping dogs lie.  If there’s anything unsavoury about this producer, I don’t know about it.  Same if there’s anything exemplary about them.

This is my first time trying one of their offerings.

Packaging

This is packaged in a nitrogen flushed tuna can.  This type of packaging is recyclable (the resealable plastic lid may not be where you are, check what plastics your city or town accepts), as well as being able to near perfectly preserve the cannabis until the metal lid is removed.  That last fact is helpful as this cannabis sat around for months before I got around to opening it (it was in the package for 213 days, but if I had opened it when I got it it would have been only 76 days).  Also of note, the date of harvest is actually supplied, but individual terpenes detected are not.

Looks

Buds are in the mid to small size range and are almost perfectly even dark purple throughout.  That said, some yellow sections of aged trim leaves are visible.  Past that the buds are well trimmed and plump coming to a sharp peak.  Except for the yellowed patches this does look very good, as long as you don’t mind the size being a bit on the smaller end.

Feel

When squeezed, buds are firm with acceptable return and humidity feels dead on.  A pleasure to grind leaving even, if a little chunky, grounds.

Scent

Upon opening the scents are sour kush with berry foundation. This reminded of Shiskaberry.  However after opening scent faded very fast.  Ground the profile is similar but has added pine elements.  As for magnitude, if you are expecting it to get loud, tough, it fades to near zero fast without being that strong to begin with.

Taste

In the vaporizer tastes match the scent, including the disappointing lack of magnitude.  Nothing really else to say, this way was disappointing.

After the lacklustre performance I decided to try smoking it instead and rolled a joint.  Although I personally don’t recommend combusting, there’s no argument that this was my preferred method.  The Tangie elements from the Tropicana Cookies ancestor jumps right out strongly here, backed up by berries with hints of lemon and pine in the background.  Much bigger and more complex tastes than I would have expected this way, definitely not disappointing.  I will note the burn quality was middling with dark ash and a tendency to go out, but I’ve had far worse.

Price and Value

This package cost me $24.99 for 3.5 grams, which works out to $7.14 a gram from Mendo Medical.  As for value, taking the pluses and minuses this feels close to right.  Nothing compelling but if it sounds good to you then why not.  It’s hard to give it an actual recommendation though due to the mediocre combustion properties, considering combustion was where the flavours really full-on shined.

Conclusions

This is the first commercial offering I’ve had in months to be honest, as I’ve been drowning in homegrown from a few good growers.  I really tend to prefer what I’ve been getting from hobby growers over most commercial products.  To spend money I really need to see compelling genetics produced by exceptional growers to bother with a purchase lately, but this was a purchase further from the luxury end just to try something that looked interesting.  In other words it was an impulse buy.  Tribal seems to be a good grower at a reasonable point on the price spectrum, but apparently try their Cuban Linx first as that’s what they are known for.
